Background Information

English language brought in line with national standards

English language has been brought into line with the national standards of education by assessment under the NVQ system which is accepted throughout the European Community.

The Bournemouth International Language College has become one of the first centres in Europe that can offer foreign students an international qualification for languages. The College is an approved, registered centre for the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry Examinations Board (LCCIEB). The LCCIEB are the awarding body for NVQ English language levels. The College has 3 registered assessors and an Internal Verifier. The certification is accepted throughout the European Union as a recognised standard in line with the educational system. The NVQ is supported by the NTO (National Training Organisation). The students support their evidence with a portfolio. The certification fee is 50 pounds.

Students are able to achieve certification in the four skill areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The qualification fits in with the Council of Europe European framework.

A comparison is:
Level 1 = A2 Waystage
Level 2 = B1 Threshold
Level 3 = B2 Vantage
Level 4 = C1 Effective Operational

There are 5 levels the students can choose from. The British comparison is:
Level 1 is graded as the lower GCSE qualification.
Level 2 is graded as an A or B grade GCSE qualification.
Level 3 is graded as an ‘A' level GCE and equivalent to the Cambridge first certificate. Level 4 is university Graduate level. Level 5 is university Post Graduate level.
