The First Point of Contact:
A new English language course for 1999
for PA's, telephonists, secretaries, receptionists
who wish to increase their career prospects

This English for a Special Purpose course is specifically designed for first contact people within companies: telephone switchboard operators; receptionists; personal assistants and secretaries etc. to improve their communication skills on the telephone skills in the safe environment of our executive-style classrooms. The two week intensive structured course concentrates solely on telephone skills and message taking, and includes the following modern training techniques.
  • The two-week course structure is divided into three modules covering 6 lessons per day: 2 lessons per day will concentrate on listening skills; 2 lessons per day on general English, note-taking and vocabulary; 2 lessons per day on telephone practice.
  • Using modern push-button telephones, students are able to conduct authentic telephone conversations both sides of which are simultaneously recorded for immediate review and error analysis.
  • Speaking and listening are clearly the main skills focussed on in any telephone conversation, but the appropriate follow-on writing tasks such as letters of confirmation, cancellation, note and message-taking are used for further consolidation.
  • During the course, students will also have real tasks to complete covering telephone communication to airports and other travel arrangements, hotels and restaurants, etc.
The cost of the course is £350 sterling per delegate with a maximum of 6 people per class. The course starts every first and third Monday every month. This price includes collection from and to Heathrow airport, all refreshments whilst at the College, all administration and course materials. On request the College will book host families for those who would like total cultural immersion at a cost of £80 sterling per week half board. Clients who wish to stay in hotels will be forwarded a list which will offer various prices and facilities.

In addition students can apply for National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) certification in listening, speaking and writing skills.
