Training Courses
The Bournemouth International Language College is a recognised TEFL teacher training unit providing training and certification to National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) standards. The College is an approved, registered centre for the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry Examinations Board (LCCI-EB).
Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)
The course is open to anyone who wishes to enter teaching, or to change their direction in life. No age restrictions or educational qualifications are required but candidates should have a reasonable understanding of the use of the English language. For overseas students, it is recommended that they have achieved at least Advanced level of English. The course is an intensive programme spread over 5 days, with a minimum of 48 hours input time from each candidate. Tuition is given by fully qualified tutors and state registered NVQ assessors. On successfully completing the first week, candidates go on to take their Cert.TEB.
To present concepts, techniques and materials which enable candidates to become effective TEFL teachers and includes the teaching of English for Business.
OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE
The candidate will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills required to teach EFL and English for Business.
SYLLABUS/TRAINING METHODOLOGY
The format of the course is a combination of input discussion, micro-teaching sessions, practical sessions; methods and techniques used in the teaching of EFL/Business English, and covers the following topics:
First week TEFL Certificate:
9:00 - 12:30 Candidates shadow tutors, taking notes on techniques, styles, delivery etc.
1:00 - 5:00 Course work
Evening: Each day, candidates are given an assignment to do ready for the following day. This should take approximately 3 hours. Second week for the Cert.TEB preparation
TRAINING RESOURCES
Each candidate receives extensive course materials covering the course, Optimum Presentation Skill, Accelerated Learning and other useful information. Aids available, classrooms equipped with TV/VCR audio-visual, OHP projector, slide projector, whiteboards, flipcharts, use of computers, small library that includes copies of course books, videos, and audio tapes.
ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES
Continual assessment takes place throughout the course and each assignment is evaluated and immediate feedback is given. The candidates have to prepare 4 lessons which are business-based to cover both group and one-to-one format. As part of the course, the candidates deliver 1 peer teach and 2 lessons under assessment. Each lesson covers one of the main skill areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing. They are delivered to a multi-lingual group of foreign students/business people, and one-to-one tuition. This gives candidates the opportunity to use the techniques they have been taught with success achieving TEFL certification. Finally, in the week following the course, the candidate compiles their portfolio and produces a business English assignment of approximately 3000 words. This final assignment is submitted to LCCI-EB for assessment who award the pass level for the Cert.TEB.

Candidates for this course must be experienced and certificated teachers or trainers in industry. The D units 32 and 33 Assessors Awards allows teachers and trainers to assess student candidates for NVQ certification in any area that the teacher or trainer is competent to assess. Requirements for this course are that the candidates are in employment and have access to three students currently studying an NVQ subject. Included in the course fees is one weeks' tuition (held in the afternoon between 1 and 5pm), plus three 1-to-1 tutorials and one assessment visit to the place of work. Travelling expenses will be charged for candidates whose place of work is outside the Bournemouth area.

The College will notify you should your application be successful. Payment is required in full prior to the course start date, along with accommodation and airport collection fees where required. It is advisable for overseas candidates to book two weeks accommodation. The College has a policy that should a candidate fail one of their assessments, it can be taken the following week at no extra charge. No refunds can be given after confirmation. Each course, because of the intensity, has availability for only a maximum of four candidates.

All candidates are advised that a weekly bus pass for unlimited local travel costs approximately £18 pounds sterling per week - but please see the enrolment page.
