Introduction
We invite adults aged 18 or more to join our International Summer Course in English Language and English Culture. This website describes the location and content of the course, accommodation arrangements, the activities programme and the procedures for enrolment.
The course is offered between Saturday July 5th and Saturday August 30th 2003. Students may enrol for a course of two weeks or more at any time during this period.
Each participant will receive an Official Certificate of Attendance at the course in Oriel College, an example of which is illustrated on this page. Please note that this is not an official University qualification.
Location
The course will take place on the premises of Oriel College Oxford. Oriel College is one of the oldest colleges in Oxford University. It was founded in 1326 by King Edward II. The collegešs official title is "The House of the Blessed Mary the Virgin in Oxford". The college stands in the centre of the University area in the city. It is one of the smaller colleges, having two hundred and ninety undergraduates and one hundred and sixty graduate students during the academic year. This special course will take place during the summer vacation of the University.

The course will consist of twenty classroom hours per week, of which fifteen hours will be devoted to the teaching of English as a foreign language and five hours to sessions on British culture and history. There will be a maximum of twelve students per class. We will assess the level of each student's English by test and interview on the first Monday of the course. Based on this evaluation, the student will be allocated to an appropriate level of class.
The management of the course will be entrusted to Swandean School of English. This school, which was founded in 1976, has year round schools in Worthing, on England's South Coast, and in Wimbledon, the famous London suburb. Swandean has been accredited by the British Council since 1983.
All teaching material will be provided to the students, who will also have access to the college's Junior Common Room and Internet facilities. During the fifteen hours of English language teaching, the focus will be on the practical application of the English language, in speaking and listening. The class teacher and the Director of Studies will monitor each individual student's progress and give assistance on individual learning problems. During the five hours per week on British culture, we will provide sessions on British history, literature, politics, current affairs and way of life.
This course is only suitable for students who have at least an elementary level of English and a vocabulary of about 250 words. The course is not suitable for beginners.
Accommodation
Participants
on the course will stay in Oriel College residences, each in a single
room. Some rooms have en suite bathrooms, some have a shower/toilet
per two rooms and all the remaining rooms have a wash hand basin and
other facilities on the staircase. The better rooms will be allocated
to the earlier applicants.
Full board will be provided, consisting of breakfast, lunch and evening meal. Meals are prepared by the college chef and his staff and are served in the traditional Oxford College dining hall. Wine, beer and soft drinks may be purchased at extra cost. There is also a college bar in the first quadrangle, which can be used by resident course participants.
Participants are reminded that the accommodation is that normally occupied by undergraduates during term time. As such, it is clean and comfortably furnished, but it should not be thought of as luxurious. Senior members of the College's academic staff remain in residence during the summer vacation and, consequently, participants on this course are requested to minimise noise from 10.00 p.m. to 8.00 a.m.
Activity programme
We
include in the price excursions, sports and social activities outside
classroom hours. Each Saturday, there will be a full day excursion to
a local place of interest, such as London, Stratford-upon-Avon or Woodstock,
home of Blenheim Palace. Sports, such as tennis swimming, volleyball
and an introduction to cricket, will be organised on two weekday afternoons
per week. In addition, there will be two evening activities per week,
such as parties, discos, cinemas or theatre visits, and music evenings.
Each activity will be supervised by a representative of the course managers. Undergraduates of Oriel College will assist in the leadership of the social programme.
Dates and fees
The course will run from Saturday July 5th to Saturday August 30th 2003, and enrolments are welcomed for durations of two weeks or more during this period. Students should plan to arrive and depart on Saturdays.
The fees for the course are £495 per week. This covers the course, full board residential accommodation and participation in the activities programme described above. There are no extra charges, except for beverages the student may wish to purchase in the college dining hall or bar.
Participants in the course can travel to and from Oxford by a bus service, operating 24 hours, at return fares from Heathrow of approximately £17 or from Gatwick of approximately £25. If required, we can arrange collection from and return to either Gatwick or Heathrow airports, in private car transfers. The cost per journey from Gatwick is £110 and from Heathrow is £75
Medical insurance can be arranged at the cost of £15 per four week period. Citizens of European Union countries should not have to pay for medical treatment but they are advised to bring their E128 form with them. Some other countries have a reciprocal agreement with Britain, whereby their citizens do not have to pay for medical treatment, but they are advised to bring their E128 form or equivalent with them. Oriel College has a doctor who is available on call.

How to enrol
Enrolments are confirmed on receipt of a completed Enrolment Application Form and a £100 deposit in part payment of fees. Please also send us two passport-sized photographs of yourself. The balance of fees is payable before your course begins. Payment may be made:–

Please ensure that the total amount sent is free of all charges from the remitting and beneficiary banks, and that the student's name is quoted on accompanying document.
We also accept payment by VISA or MASTERCARD, for the £100 deposit.
Public Holidays. The school regrets that, if a public holiday occurs during any course, it is unable to grant any reimbursements for time lost.
Scheduling of Courses. The school reserves the right to cancel or otherwise alter the dates, times or any of the other particulars of courses, except that in the event of cancellation all payments made in respect of courses so cancelled will be refunded.
Limits of Liability. Swandean School cares sincerely about the welfare of all its students and makes its best efforts to assist them in resolving problems that may arise for them in or out of school. While, however, it does its best to help, it accepts no responsibility or liability in respect of deficiencies in the services of any third party which it may use in connection with its own services to students, nor for any injury, illness, damage, loss, delay or inconvenience howsoever occasioned to or incurred by the student. Any additional expenses incurred as a result of any of the foregoing shall be borne exclusively by the student.
Jurisdiction. In the unlikely event of an unresolved dispute, the laws of the United Kingdom will apply.
Cancellations and Refunds
Cancellations must be notified in writing. If a cancellation is received
28 days or less before a course begins, the £100 deposit will
be retained as a cancellation fee.
No tuition fees will be refunded in the event of late arrival, non-attendance or withdrawal from a course. The school reserves the right to suspend or expel a student for serious misconduct, without refund of fees. Accommodation is subject to one week’s notice of cancellation.
Students are recommended to purchase insurance before leaving their home country to cover course cancellation (through accident or illness), travel baggage, etc.
